昔闻洞庭水,今上岳阳楼。
吴楚东南坼,乾坤日夜浮。
亲朋无一字,老病有孤舟。
戎马关山北,凭轩涕泗流。

I heard of the famous Dongting Lake long ago,
Now to see it from the Yueyang Tower I’m glad so.
Eastern Wu and southern Chu were separated here;
Day and night, the sun and moon drift off and appear.
I haven’t heard from my kinsmen and friends to this day;
Old and sick, long in my lonely boat I’ve to stay.
War flames on the Northern Frontier are on the rise;
I lean against the rails with tears flowing from my eyes.
